i wonder who's to blame

you can be a meat eater. i really don't mind. it's your problem. i know that all of us have thought about what meat eating entails, and have come to terms with it or not - decided that we "care" or not. i chose not caring many times myself, before turning vegetarian. it's fine (well not exactly "fine", but...). i don't even really give a crap if you're a progressive, a feminist, an environmentalist, and yet you still eat meat and have found a way to justify that to yourself. whatever. be my guest! BUT there is no reason - no excuse - for eating foie gras, for example. none. foie gras = 100% unnecessary cruelty, active inhumanity, willful stupidity.

LATER EDIT: and i'm getting gladder by the second that i made that decision. here's a whole post with massive amounts of speculation on an issue - based on misunderstanding the whole premise and specifics of it, as the most important piece of information about beth ditto (from the neo-riot grrrl band the gossip) appearing naked on the cover of the british music mag nme is missing from this ibtp "analysis" of women posing naked as an act of feminist rebellion. it's so fucking simplistic and black-and-white. ok. the thing about that beth ditto cover is that it's a response to the fact that earlier in the year, when nme named her "rock star of the year" they "forgot" to also put her on the cover - a decision that was not only (hetero)sexist but also sizeist. lots of feminist fury, including beth's, was directed at nme for that... i guess they were taken to task, they realized their stupidity, and in the end decided to make up for it. the fact that beth's on their cover proud and naked is a fucking slap in the face to nme and anyone who doesn't want to see someone who looks like beth on magazine covers. besides, to understand where beth is coming from fully, one must know the first thing about riot grrrl culture, about the revolt against "fat oppression"... and one must be aware of the fact that gossip shows regularly feature beth stripping down to her underwear - and how much that's not about self-objectification (it's about NON-objectification)! it's so fucking sad to see a "straight-faced" "radical" feminist critique of all of this which basically boils down to "poor little girl, you have no idea what you're doing, 'pornifying' yourself." arrrrgh! i don't have time right now to do web searches to link up the different info, but i'll try to at some point.
