sexual politics of meat, chapter five thousand

it seems anthony bourdain has gotten over his traumatic experience in beirut, about which he wrote something that i both admired and criticised, and is now back to his veggie-hatin', stupid statement makin', macho-posturin' ways.

he, unsurprisingly, is a crusader for keeping that good old tradition of stuffing food down ducks' throats so that their livers can get nice and fatty enough for human consumption; you know, one of those things that should make anyone proud to be a human and totally unrelated, of course, to the mentality that cruelty is ok - especially towards the helpless - that generally pushes people to all kinds of violence to others. for example, to women. and how does anthony bourdain make this point, that foie gras is completely ok? he calls the controversy a fight over "whether a duck can handle what any respectable adult film ingenue considers routine" - in other words, those ducks are only getting what they deserve, and they like it, exactly like those whores who enjoy getting things rammed down their throats, too. this from a guy who argues he's way too concerned about human rights violations to worry about some birds. beautiful.

sexual politics of meat, anyone?

twisty wrote about this (after lauren did) and she brings it as usual:

Bourdain, a trembling patriarchalist whose deepest fear is a vegetarian takeover of the world, really enjoys making this porn-to-abused duck comparison. In the aforementioned blog comment he says, ripping on people who delude themselves that force-feeding ducks is gross: “… a duck can handle what any respectable adult film ingenue considers routine.” And again, in a Salon interview: “These ducks aren’t doing anything that a porn star doesn’t do on a regular basis.”

See, Bourdain knows what time it is. He knows it’s cool to shove a cock down a woman’s throat for the amusement of paying customers, so it follows that it’s cool to shove a funnel down a duck’s throat for the amusement of paying customers. Hell, shove any old thing down any old throat for the amusement of paying customers. Whatever. It’s cool.

It has no sense. While someone chooses to be a porn star, a duck doesn't choose that and in fact doesn't want to be a farm star. I'm trying to understand what's in his head, but I really cannot. Maybe it's empty :D

@thinking girl: yes. really really really disgusting. have you read the sexual politics of meat? i'd love to hear your take on it.

@marius: yeah... i think his point was that actually force feeding isn't actually disgusting (for a duck) just like deep throating can't be anything unpleasant (for at least certain kinds of women) - neither one is out of the ordinary or "cruelty" because it's no more than what ducks and women deserve and enjoy. the issue of choice doesn't even come in, because we're talking about beings that are dehumanized from the start: what does bourdain care about whether they acquiesce to those practices? it's an irrelevant point. you know? anyway, like some of the commenters at i blame the patriarchy said, bourdain should be subjected to either one of those things himself, and then talk. i'd almost want to grin here, but i can't, it's just so sickening.

nope, I haven't read it yet. it's in my stack of
"waiting to be finished school so I can read what I want" books.

I'll let you know when I do get to it.
