this is so excellent: a short film on chinese/asian stereotypes
"a chink in the armor" by baun mah
from reappropriate (via alas, a blog):
We all know kung fu? We blush red like cherries when we drink? Think again!yes, me too! in addition, here's something about the racial slur "chink" - and more parody and "taking back" of the word here: chink-o-rama. in the same stereotype busting-minded vein, i recommend the chinkees and big bad chinese mama. and "beyond the model minority myth" has some basic points relevant to the issue of "good" vs "bad" stereotypes.
Check out this hilarious "documentary" on Chinese Canadian stereotyping.
... The only criticism I had of this video was the insistence upon a distinction between "good" stereotypes and "bad" stereotypes. We all know this to be a fallacy.
But, grit your teeth through those two minutes in the film, because it all makes up for it in the end, when they get to the "kung fu test". I laughed so hard I was literally crying.
