stereotype this

this is so excellent: a short film on chinese/asian stereotypes

"a chink in the armor" by baun mah

from reappropriate (via alas, a blog):
We all know kung fu? We blush red like cherries when we drink? Think again!
Check out this hilarious "documentary" on Chinese Canadian stereotyping.
... The only criticism I had of this video was the insistence upon a distinction between "good" stereotypes and "bad" stereotypes. We all know this to be a fallacy.
But, grit your teeth through those two minutes in the film, because it all makes up for it in the end, when they get to the "kung fu test". I laughed so hard I was literally crying.
yes, me too! in addition, here's something about the racial slur "chink" - and more parody and "taking back" of the word here: chink-o-rama. in the same stereotype busting-minded vein, i recommend the chinkees and big bad chinese mama. and "beyond the model minority myth" has some basic points relevant to the issue of "good" vs "bad" stereotypes.
