and links (resource site & great talks on veg*anism)

check out vegatopia.org,

authors of my favorite presentation from the ivu world congress:
"Ethical veganism and the challenge of interlocking oppressions: how do we create Vegatopia?" (Matthew Cole & Karen Morgan, UK)

i also highly recommend:
"A Global Dietary Imperative to Global Warming" (Saurabh Dalal, U.S.) &
"Instrumental Rationality (as proposed by Herbert Marcuse): a Key Concept in Understanding our Relationship with Nature" (Paula Brügger, Brazil)

here are 2 slides from drs cole and morgan's talk, showing how in current society speciesist oppression/the unjust treatment of non-human animals is justified and perpetuated through a "material and discursive" placement of animals at different points on subjectivity<->objectification and visibility<->invisibility scales; the constructedness of this hierarchy becomes obvious when considering that the same animal can be thought of as exhibiting different levels of subjectivity and made less or more visibile based on the type of function it fulfills for humans:

and one about what "vegatopia" would entail:

with the following as the vegatopia.org definition for veganism:
“…Ethical veganism refers to the practice of minimizing, as far as possible, the harm caused to all animals (nonhuman and human). This involves choosing to eat a vegan diet; choosing products that do not depend on violence against, or the exploitation of, animals; campaigning against unnecessary human activities that harm nonhuman and human animals.”
