the lady president of some lady thing
oh, god. i'm torn between laughing convulsively and not enjoying this 100%. the daily show doesn't do feminism that well, with rare exceptions. and i felt this segment just goes downhill after a certain point, though it starts out really great... and samantha bee rocks! whatever. heheh, "bodybuildrexes"!
(oh, i see, it's some kind of "sex and the city" send-off... had no clue... probably why i didn't vibe much even with the parody. but a significant extra layer.)

hi!
i'm a first generation romanian-american woman. my father ran away from the communists blah blah blah. i identify with being romanian pretty strongly.
i had no idea that there was a serious feminist community in romania. i've been a feminist in the US for a few years, and i had looked for feminist organization, groups of women, blogs, etc and never found it. all of a sudden i stumbled on ladyfest romania by accident!
so thank you so much for, uh, existing. i've read your blogs a bit and you're awesome.
do you happen to have any links on hand where i could find info for romanian feminism? i don't know why i find it so difficult to find. :(
thanks,
Lorelei
salut, lorelei, glad you found the ladyfest site and thanks for commenting here. hell, yeah, we're awesome! :D just kidding... do you speak romanian? putem vorbi si in romaneste.
so what can one say about feminism in romania? well... you may want to start with this post i wrote for march 8th, and further this list of texts, links and titles off of the ladyfest-ro '05 restrospective cd.
but, basically, there's not all that much going on as far as feminist movement - anti-feminism is actually quite strong and misogyny widely celebrated, not least of all among women, and "feminism" is portrayed as either a ridiculous relic from the (communist) past or the strawfeminism we all know and love (manhating and so on) borrowed from "outside"! some of the most vocal and popular romanian writers and intellectuals are strongly anti-feminist, in fact... so any feminist sentiments are hard to hear or discern in the mainstream. but there is a strong-ish anti-gender violence movement, several coalitions, with lots of organizations and institutions involved... which is good/ok, but it doesn't function that well because they don't have enough resources, and as i said the whole environment that they have to operate in is deeply patriarchal and virulently anti-woman. besides, they are quite institutional, concerned with "equal opportunity" mainly, they rarely call themselves "feminist"... while the majority of those who do use the term "feminist" tend towards liberal feministm anyway. consequently, the status quo is REALLY slow to change.
and then there's the few people interested in grassroots feminism, in direct action, social justice and so on... and that's where the ladyfest group fits in. there's not too many leftist-radicalo-third wave feminists around... but we exist, and we're trying our best... especially to build some kind of community, which is exactly what's missing, as you've noticed. the main goal of ladyfest is precisely this! you should see some of the bullshit we're up against, though! anyway... feel free to get involved! :D
