goodness 'cause it's good
some c... almost wrote "comfort"... things (but they're not necessarily "comfortable," just good for the soul - to be not only martha stewart-y but sappy, too; which i totally am):WHALE RIDER (Te kaieke tohora), directed by Niki Caro - a movie about a young girl and her love for and place in her community, in a coastal maori village in new zealand; it's based on the book of the same name by new zealander witi ihimaera.
YELL FIRE! by Michael Franti and Spearhead - the new album from one of the most political artists around; great reggae, folk, rock, rap, everything. great lyrics. sometimes it's too poppy and/or mellow and even a bit on the jam-band side, but if you're going to have any of that in your life, this is the right package for it to come in. (see also this about franti's film on his experiences travelling in war-torn places in the middle east, which the album draws from, as well.)
WHERE YOU LIVE by Tracy Chapman - the new album, because the show was sooooo good, and because it's so beautiful. and, on the other hand, because: "You were lost and got lucky / Came upon the shore / Found you were conquering America / You spoke of peace / But waged a war / While you were conquering America // There was land to take / And people to kill / While you were conquering America / You served yourself / Did God's will / While you were conquering America // The ghost of Columbus haunts this world / 'Cause you're still conquering America / The meek won't survive / Or inherit the earth / 'Cause you're still conquering America // America // You found bodies to serve / Submit and degrade / While you were conquering America / Made us soldiers and junkies / Prisoners and slaves / While you were conquering America // America // You hands are at my throat / My back's against the wall / Because you're still conquering America / We're sick and tired hungry and poor / 'Cause you're still conquering America // You bomb the very ground / That feeds your own babies / You're still conquering America / Your sons and your daughters / May never sing your praises / While you're conquering America // America // I see your eyes seek a distant shore / While you're conquering America / Taking rockets to the moon / Trying to find a new world / And you're still conquering America // America // The ghost of Columbus haunts this world / 'Cause you're still conquering America / You're still conquering America..." (she drums on this one!) [note to self: quote this again on columbus day :D] also, because everyone loves tracy chapman.
and oldies but goodies:
- REPEATER + 3 SONGS by Fugazi - the best album of all time, and i'm right about this;
- THE ADVENTURES OF DUNNO AND HIS FRIENDS by Nikolai Nosov - the best children's book of all time, also definite;
- BORDERLANDS/LA FRONTERA by Gloria Anzaldua - there was never anyone more wise and funny and complex and awesome than gloria anzaldua, and no book more amazing than this one about living at borders between countries, cultures, languages, identities.

oh my god, yes! "trei grasani" all the way, too! :D or almost all the way. "dunno" is still better, 'cause "three fat men" is a bit too communist propaganda-ish if you think about it (you know... the three evil fat capitalists vs. the working class circus guys...). but i only realized what it was an allegory for much later, i also have the same weird (and sweet) memory about when i first read it and loved it and discussed it with my friends, probably at around 8 or 9. :D something i remember about it is that the doll-girl thing disturbed me greatly even then. ok, i'm almost scared to look at the link 'cause i'm sure it will be quite a mind-f**k. did you know it was called "three fat men, a revolutionary fairy tale"?? whoa. btw thanks for that link!
